Moeko Maeda (b. 1983, Hyogo, Japan) is a Los Angeles–based artist working across painting and performance. Her practice engages closely with salt, water, and other natural materials, exploring the relationship between the material and the spiritual.

Salt, long associated with purification in Japan, has held a significant presence in Maeda’s life since childhood and has become central to her practice. Her paintings emerge through a meditative process, often beginning with intuitively written words that gradually become embedded beneath layers of color and material.

Through the movement of water and the crystallization of salt, intricate surfaces grow, carrying traces of both the artist’s hand and natural processes. Maeda’s works inhabit a quiet space between the visible and the unseen.
