Ken Higaki is a Los Angeles-based artist originally from Kagawa, Japan, whose figurative painting investigates the unstable territory between desire and violence, beauty and abjection, and restraint and instinct. Drawing from the technical traditions of Venetian oil painting and the theatricality of Baroque imagery, Higaki constructs psychologically charged scenes in which flesh, gesture, and expression become vehicles for exploring the contradictions of human behavior. His densely rendered figures, often possessing animalistic qualities, occupy a liminal space between human and beast, exposing the primal impulses that underlie intimacy, power, and desire.

Raised between Japan and Portland, Oregon, Higaki’s practice is informed by a layered cultural perspective and an interest in the ways bodies communicate beyond language. Through chiaroscuro, heightened physicality, and tightly composed encounters, he creates images that oscillate between seduction and repulsion, tenderness and aggression. His engagement with the conventions of historical figurative painting is consequently less an exercise in nostalgia than a means of bringing the psychological and corporeal intensity of contemporary life into dialogue with the canon.
